ABOUT
I am a journalist, writer, documentarian, and educator. I’m currently a Teaching Professor of Journalism at University of Washington.
I am a seasoned media professional with two decades of experience in journalism, media, and sports. I am a proven leader, managing people, projects, events, and community engagement in my two decades in the media industry and higher education.
I have an M.A. in journalism from the Annenberg School at University of Southern California.
My work has been featured across national, regional, local, and alt weekly media outlets including Crosscut, San Diego CityBeat, The Los Angeles Times, Orange County Register, Seattle Weekly, CBS Sports, Sounder at Heart and others. I am skilled in producing written, video, and multimedia work, but also in media, public, and community relations approaches to storytelling.
I won the 2013 Nevada Press Association Outstanding Journalist of the Year award, and I was a finalist for the 2017 Boston Globe Spotlight Investigative Journalism Fellowship. I also took home the NPA’s investigative reporting and community service awards in 2014, as well as their 2013 Freedom of the Press Award for work investigating law enforcement corruption. I received the 2001 San Diego Society of Professional Journalists Award for my coverage of Sept. 11, a Demmler Award for journalism education innovation in 2011, and the 2007 USC Annenberg Award for Outstanding Print Journalism.
I have contributed to multiple books, including “Journalism of Ideas” (2013, Routledge), and I enjoy being a regular speaker and guest at journalism conferences and on various television, radio, and news programs.
